You’ve landed your dream job, but your boss is turning it into a nightmare. Last-minute demands, yelling and screaming, disregard for your role, a general angry demeanour… any one of those behaviours (and more!) can turn an ideal work place into hell.

But before you hit up the classified section searching for a new job, how about trying to calm your workplace stress the natural way?

It’s a catch-22. When you’re under workplace stress, you’re too, well, stressed to find ways to cope. But doing so is essential to your mental health and wellbeing. After all, the effects of stress are proven to be more than just temporary. Long-term illnesses can stem from prolonged periods of chronic stress.

Aromatherapy and essential oils for anxiety can be a win-win solution. It’s easy to set up and maintain, so it doesn’t add more stress to your day, and it’s effective and low-cost.

Lavender essential oil is one of the top stress-busting essential oils. It can provide stress relief, anxiety relief, and boost short-term memory. Studies have found the scent of lavender stimulates brain pathways that are connected to our brain response and memories.

Try applying a few drops on the palm of your hand and inhale deeply. You can also rub two to three drops into your temples — especially useful if you have a tension headache.

For a quick desk break, you can place a drop of lavender or peppermint oil in your palms and rub them together. Cup your palms over your face and do six or seven breathing inhalations with your eyes closed.

To bring the de-stressing effects to your entire office (so long as it isn’t a scent-free zone), keep a wine glass or brandy snifter on your desk and tap a few drops into the glass. They’ll evaporate gradually, like a passive diffuser. Or you can bring a diffuser to work and keep it on your desk during the day.

Maybe your stress is keeping you awake at night and you find yourself fighting the 3 p.m. slump. Essential oils can help you focus. Try putting a drop of tea tree essential oil or eucalyptus essential oil at the opening of each nostril to clear your breathing passages. You can also put a few drops on the back of your neck.

If you’re still doubting the effects of essential oils, doubt no longer — it’s scientifically proven. A group of researchers at UC San Diego sent out “Code Lavender” packages to staff around the university. Each package included a comforting message, lavender essential oil, chocolate, and information about employee health services.

All the participants found the packages helpful and 84% said they would recommend it to others. You could try this at your workplace — maybe make essential oil care packages for your coworkers, or give one to your boss — it could shut his or her stress right down, making your life easier in the process!
