Who doesn’t love spring cleaning? Shaking off the long, cold winter. Getting deep into the nooks and crannies. Decluttering the physical and spiritual. It’s one of the best times of year. A good spring cleaning can help you appreciate your space even more, and a grateful life is a good life.

We’re betting when you clean your home, you want it to actually be clean. And that can come down to the type of cleanser you use. At Thursday Plantation Canada, we’ve heard from many people who have used store-bought cleaners filled with chemicals for cleaning their homes and then had a loved one or pet suffer a chemical reaction from it. That doesn’t sound so clean to us.

A more natural way to clean that won’t result in toxic chemical reactions is cleaning with essential oils. Namely, eucalyptus essential oil. In Australia, most homes have a big bottle of eucalyptus essential oil just for cleaning. Eucalyptus oil kills 99.9% of household germs, removes stains, grease, and tar, and is suitable for many surfaces — including kitchen, bathroom, and floors. As a bonus, cleaning with essential oils can save money since you’re only using one product — not multiple.

When you’re spring cleaning, you want your home to be clean, not dangerous. Here are our top tips for spring cleaning with essential oils:

  1. Make an All-Purpose Cleaner

No more store-bought cleaners necessary. A great way to speed up your spring cleaning is to make your own natural cleaner. A recipe you could try is:

  • 1/4 cup white vinegar
  • 2 Tbsp. baking soda
  • 1/4 gallon (1 liter) hot water
  • a few drops of essential oil, such as eucalyptus essential oil or tea tree essential oil
  1. Fight Mildew

Tea tree essential oil is great to use to fight mildew in the shower, or to include in an all-purpose kitchen spray.

  1. Deodorize Shoes and Gym Bags

Stinky shoes and gym bags (or hockey bags – yuck!) can really cut down on the enjoyment of your space. Eliminate the stench with essential oils. Take a couple cotton balls and put some drops of your favourite essential oils on them (eucalyptus and tea tree oils are antibacterial) and put them with the offending smell. Leave them in overnight and smell the difference.

  1. Air Out the Car

Spring cleaning can include all the space where you spend your time — such as your car. Cleaning your vehicle is easy to ignore but the weird smells that somehow build up aren’t. A simple trick is to take a wooden clothes pin, put a few drops of essential oil on it, and then pin it to your AC vent.

  1. Refresh Your Linens

Lavender essential oil smells great and is especially nice to have on your bedding. You can create an easy linen spray or add five drops to your laundry detergent to keep must out.

  1. Wash Floors

A few drops of eucalyptus essential oil in the water when you clean your floors will make your floors shine and your home smell fresh. It’s also perfect for keeping insects away.

This is only scratching the surface when it comes to cleaning with essential oils. There are so many uses and ways to clean your house from top to bottom that you’ll want to keep using them long after you’re done your spring cleaning.
