Pets, hockey bags, that mysterious musty smell that lingers around the washing machine — all can contribute to a home that, well, doesn’t smell as fresh as it could.
But you’re a savvy consumer and you know the answer to fresher air doesn’t lie in spraying harsh chemicals around your house. You want a solution that smells great and is great for you. We have your answer: an essential oil air freshener.
Sure, you’ve probably thought of putting essential oils in a diffuser. And a diffuser is one of our favourite natural living ways to get the scent of essential oils wafting through your home. But if you’re in need of an upgraded diffuser, or just want to try something new, consider these alternatives for a great essential oil air freshener:
- Use a pinecone.
It doesn’t get more natural than a pinecone — straight from Mother Nature herself. And there are plenty outside during the fall in Canada. We love this tip from Bustle: take a few pinecones, put them in a basket, and add a few drops of essential oil. Lavender essential oil is a great choice! You only need one to two drops of oil per pinecone. The benefit of the basket is that you can move it from room to room as needed.
- Make your own essential oil air freshener.
So much easier than buying a spray from the grocery store — and so much better for you, too. If you’re in the market for a natural air freshener, try making an essential oil spritz. Add three to four drops of your favourite essential oil to about a cup of water in a spray bottle. Shake it before each use and then give it a spray. Try using our eucalyptus essential oil for a woodsy refresher that can help keep your sinuses clear.
- Deodorize carpets.
Especially if you have pets, you know how smelly the rug can become. But we can save you the time and expense of a steam clean. Lifestyle blogger Jill Nystul recommends mixing borax, baking soda, and essential oils in a bowl. Shake the mixture over your carpet and leave on for 15 to 20 minutes. Once time is up, vacuum your rug. It’s that simple!
- Secretly keep bathroom smells at bay.
It’s no secret the bathroom is one of the places in the house that could use the most deodorizing. But what is secret is how easily you’ll be able to hide this natural air freshener! Take a cotton swab and dab the end into your favourite essential oil, then tuck the swab into your toilet paper roll. Use more than one swab if a stronger scent is needed.
